The popular holiday region Ritten used to be known as a holiday resort for the wealthy families of the state capital, who in search of something "fresh" during the hot summer months retreated to their summer home high above Bolzano.
Just above the city of Bolzano is the Ritten, a magnificent plateau with an average altitude of around 1,000 meters. A spectacular panoramic cable car connects this ridge in the southeast of the Sarntal Alps with the state capital and offers the opportunity to admire the flora and fauna of this area from a height. In Rentsch, on the southern slope of the Ritten, you can see about the St. Magdalena church, which, surrounded by grapevines, is located on a hill whose loose sediments from glacial gravel and Moränenablagerungen ideal conditions for wine growing. On the way to Ritten the panorama and the flora change: the forests, consisting mainly of coniferous trees, are becoming ever denser. Cozy paths meander through mountain pines and alpine roses. Once at the top, you can continue on the Rittner Bahn from Oberbozen to Klobenstein and admire the wonderful natural landscapes. A journey into the past, back to the year 1907, an attraction for young and old.
"Here on the Ritten, it is divinely beautiful and comfortable, I have an inexhaustible desire to do nothing," said Sigmund Freud, a great lover of this holiday resort, one of his stays on the Ritten high plateau. Today it is possible to go up here on Freud's footsteps and to follow the path named after him.
The holiday region Ritten is particularly suitable for hiking with children, both on foot and by mountain bike. There are walking and hiking trails for every taste: from leisurely walks through beautiful natural landscapes to more demanding tours, such as the Rittner Horn - a charming panoramic point at 2,260 m. From here, the view is breathtaking: the view stretches from the Dolomite peaks, UNESCO World Natural Heritage, over the Grossglockner to the ice giants of the Ortles Alps.
In contrast, the winter season is perfect for snowshoeing through enchanting fairytale landscapes or for exciting days on the ski slopes. The ski resort is also perfect for children.
The Ritten is known above all for its earth pyramids, erosion caused earth pillars with a capstone. In the popular holiday region there are these types of erosion forms in the Finsterbachtal between Lengomoos and Mittelberg, in the Katzenbach below Oberbozen, in the Gasterer Graben near Unterinn and in the Gasserlahn near Oberinn.
A visit is also worth the Wolfsgrubner See, which invites you to swim on warm summer days and romantic ice skating in winter. From here you can easily reach the Plattnerhof, an exceptional, approximately 600 year old farm, which is famous for its beekeeping. In the former stable of the yard, the bee museum houses a collection of historical beekeeping equipment, which are explained in the course of the museum tour.
